Upma is a popular breakfast dish and today we have a Suji/Semolina Upma for Babies, with healthy carbohydrates, veggies and healing spices!
We all know how busy weekday mornings can be – been there, done that! There are a million things to do, even if you’re working from home and the kids have online classes. Making a healthy breakfast in the middle of everything can be difficult, but not impossible!
We love recipes that are quick, use only a few ingredients but still end up yummy and healthy. And one breakfast recipe that fits the bill perfectly is suji upma! It is made across India and can be customized based on your personal preferences.
Suji upma is usually made for older kids, but today we have a filling breakfast recipe for your little ones too. We have added grated carrots, making it all the more wholesome and giving the upma that gorgeous color!
Suji/Semolina Upma for Babies
Ingredients:
- Suji /semolina – 2-3 tablespoon
- Carrot – 1 small, grated
- Onion – 1 small grated (optional)
- Ghee – 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds / roasted cumin powder – 1/4 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder – a pinch
Method
- Heat ghee in a pan. Keep 1 cup of water to heat in another pan.
- Add cumin seeds to the ghee. Once the seeds crackle, add the grated onion, if using. Saute for about a minute.
- Next add in grated carrot and stir fry for few seconds.
- Add turmeric powder, followed by suji.
- Stir fry the suji with veggies on low to medium flame for 1-2 minutes.
- Now add the boiling water slowly while stirring continuously to ensure no lumps are formed in the upma. Keep stirring the upma until it attains a desired consistency.
- Put off the flame. The upma further thickens on cooling, so adjust the cooking time and amount of water accordingly.
- Serve the upma to your baby while it is still warm.
While introducing suji upma to your baby, make sure it is of thin consistency. You may give a thicker upma and also add more vegetables to it like green peas later. This recipe is suitable for babies aged 7–8 months. It also works well as a healthy breakfast for older kids, in which case you can add some salt for kids above 1 year.
