A common cause of worry for most Indian Moms is regarding the weight of their children and whether their baby is following the standard height and weight chart for babies .Some Moms think that the baby’s weight is a reflection of the Mom’s way of raising the child and think a chubby baby is a sign of good upbringing!!Now obviously, this isn’t true and as I always say, ” Look at the baby and not at the scales!“My mantra is:
” As long as the baby is active and healthy, there is no need to worry about the weight gain”
Due to this, nearly 80% of the mails I receive every day are about babies’ weight, particularly about how to know if they are underweight and what to do if that is the case. Being chubby isn’t necessarily a sign of good health, since an obese baby is prone to several health problems throughout his life. As long as your baby’s diet is adequate and balanced you don’t have to worry about his weight.
However, it is important to keep an eye on a baby’s weight, since being either underweight or overweight can put the baby at risk of many illnesses. Since replying to each email is bound to take up a lot of time, I decided to write this post on standard height and weight charts for babies that every parent should have access to.
These Height and Weight Chart for Babies are from the World Health Organization and along with these detailed charts, I have also included an easy reference chart for parents to calculate the ideal weight of their baby or toddler based on the Pediatric Textbook .
Baby Weight based on Birth Weight
The table shown below is a simple way to calculate your baby’s ideal weight according to his weight at birth.
Age | Weight |
0-3 Months | Gain of 175 g – 210 g per week |
5 Months | Double the Birth Weight |
6-12 Months | Gain of 400 g per month |
1 Year | 3 times the birth weight |
2 Years | 4 times the birth weight |
3 Years | 5 times the birth weight |
5 Years | 6 times the birth weight |
7 Years | 7 times the birth weight |
10 Years | 10 times the birth weight |
An average child gains 2 kg every year between 3 to 7 years of age and 3 kg per year after that till the pubertal growth spurt begins.
Height and Weight Chart for Babies
The following height and weight charts for babies show child growth standards that were developed using data collected in the WHO Multicenter Growth Reference Study. The World Health Organization growth standards are based on healthy, exclusively breastfed babies from six countries across five continents. These Height and Weight Chart for Babies accurately show how a normal baby should grow.
Baby Growth Chart Interpretation
Before you check out the Height and Weight Chart for Babies to know about your baby weight, you should know how to interpret the growth charts.
In the below Simplified field charts there are 5 percentiles – 3% , 15%, 50%, 85%, 97%
The 3rd centile line gives an indication where the lower end of the normal range is – actually 3% of normal infants and toddlers will be below the 3rd centile.
The 50th centile is where 50% of the population will sit.The 97th centile gives an indication where the upper end of the normal range is – actually 3% of normal infants and toddlers will be above the 97th centile. So anywhere between the 2nd and 98th centiles is appropriate growth.
Let’s discuss with an example with image above
Girl Baby A’s birth weight was 2.7 kg, you can see the above chart it comes under the 15%
( we will not be taking a definite weight, these charts should be always interpreted in a range)
After the completion of One year Baby A weighs 7.8 kg
Interpretation – I would say Baby A has a normal growth and weight gain as she has followed the percentile line.
See the below chart, this is a chart from WHO. So you can plot the weight according to age and see if your baby is following the line, So if I plot for Baby A , she follows the 15% percentile closely which is good. A minor deviation is not considered significant.
When should you be concerned ?
Don’t be concerned if there isn’t an appropriate increase in weight over 1 week – wait and see what happens over 3 months. Babies attract lots of viral illnesses so their weight may tend to fluctuate. But over time, they will usually manage to put on the required weight.
For example if Baby A’s weight is 5.8 kg on completion of 1 year, I would be seriously worried and that warrants a complete nutritional and developmental check up.

Girls Weight for Age – Birth to 5 years
Boys Weight for Age – Birth to 5 years
Girls Length for Age – Birth to 2 years
Girls Height for Age – 2 years to 5 years
Boys Length for Age – Birth to 2 years
Boys Height for Age – 2 years to 5 years
These are simplified field tables for easy use and interpretation. You can view and download charts from the WHO Website as well.
What to do if your Baby is Underweight
If your baby is indeed underweight, it’s a good idea to get him checked out by a pediatrician to rule out any medical problems. If everything is fine, then it’s basically a problem with nutrition. Babies who can’t latch on properly give up sucking after a while, which means that he’s probably not getting the richer hind milk from your breast. When feeding a baby above 6 months of age, high calorie healthy foods like bananas rather than unhealthy options like ice cream. Click this link to know about the Weight gaining Foods For Babies.
It is important to remember that if you’ve had a premature baby or multiples, the standard Height and Weight Chart for Babies may not apply, and it’s best to consult your pediatrician in such cases. In any case, these numbers are not set in stone and will vary from baby to baby. Even siblings can show different patterns in gaining weight; it doesn’t matter as long as the baby is healthy, active and developing normally otherwise. So as I mentioned earlier, don’t obsess with the scale, just relax and enjoy your baby!
Worried about how to prepare weight gaining foods ? Don’t worry, we prepare it hygienically and ship it to your doorstep
There are many infant weight percentile calculator, child growth chart calculator, height weight percentile girl calculator, height weight percentile boy calculator, height and weight percentile calculator available online, but I would always suggest you to check with your paediatrician before getting worried that your baby doesn’t meet the standard Height and Weight Chart for Babies.

I have one more boy baby who is 5.6 year old, I can not be there in NRC for 1 month with my girl baby alone, as it government I have to only take care my baby inside NRC and others can not come inside(e.g. father) leave baby even for a min alone. My other baby not allowed inside NRC,

Rashami Sarode says
I don’t understand why Indian moms are so obsessed with their childs weight. Everyone wants chubby baby. When we feed our babies or kids we ask them to have one more bite, which is totally unhealthy and will be definitely harmful in long run. Because kids learn to ignore that their tummies are full and still eat more. So moms, as long as your child is happy and healthy, and folloeing his weigh chart, don’t worry about their weight much.
My daughter is thin, so everyone thinks that I don’t feed her properly. But she eats almost all the vegetables including methi and palak.. Nutrition and variety of foods are much more important than just high calorie and weight gaining food.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Rashami,
Thanks a lot for sharing your views dear 🙂

Hi, my daughter is 3.1 yrs old weighs 12.5 kg. She vomits very frequently either after meals or during traveling in car. Pls suggest what to do also tell me about weight
Dr Hemapriya says
Hello Kanika,
If your child is not used to traveling it is common for a child or adult to have vomiting and feeling nauseous while traveling check with your pediatrician they will prescribe a syrup which should be taken before traveling to prevent vomiting during journey.
As for vomiting after meal overfeeding can be a cause give food in small portion to your child and feed again after 2 hours so that your child don’t get to be hungry and to fulfill the daily nutrition on foods. Make the food more presentable and attractive in the eyes of your child and allow self feeding in your child that will also help your child in accepting foods.
Feed weight gaining foods include weight gaining foods and our weight gaining products in your child’s everyday diet. And after meal make your child rest or a small nap to effectively gain weight.

SHARMILA says
Hi Doctor,
My baby girl’s weight was 2.07 kg when she was born – full term baby but small baby. Since day 1 she doesn’t drink much milk and when she started taking solids (5 months), she loves to eat and was eating well for a couple of months. However, her weight gain was very slow. Now she is 1 year and 2 months old. Her eating habit has changed where she only takes few mouths / spoons and refused to eat and shows more interest in playing. Recently we had an appointment with a paediatrician and we’ve checked her weight which was only 6.9kg. Other wise she is very active, able to hold and walk, stand on her own for few seconds, climb up steps, talks more than 10 words. Rarely falls sick ( fever only once) and we don’t see any delay in her progress. Her slow weight gain is quite a concern for us. We have met few paeds and some says its normal as long as she is active and gaining weight and doesn’t lose weight. Others say it requires medical attention. We have tried all sorts of food to increase her appetite. Appreciate your opinion.
pr says

Hi Doctor,
My baby girl’s birth weight is 2.68 kg and she weighs 3.5kg at 6 weeks. She looks lean. Is her weight increasing properly or increment is not sufficient??
What kind of foods should I take to increase her weight?
She has prickly heat too Doc…
Thank you.
pr says
Hi Monika,
Please don’t worry of weight if baby is active and healthy. Breast feed your baby frequently. That is the best food for your baby as of now. While feeding, make sure to empty each side and then swap to the next side. The hind milk which comes in the later part is more nutritious and that would help in increasing the baby weight. Please check on the link for home remedies to treat prickly heat. Hope you find it helpful.

Hi Lisa,
Intestinal gas is normal in kids. It can be cured, by practicing few habits and moderating few foods intake. Please make the baby sit in one place and eat. Playing or being occupied with some activities while eating may end up air being getting trapped in intestinal track.Beans, cauliflower, potatoes can induce gas. While cooking add garlic and asafoetida while preparing such veggies. Please check on the link for effective home remedies for indigestion. Link – https://goo.gl/rvttRx

Hi..my baby was 2.1 kgs at birth and he is soon to be 9 months old..his current weight is only 6.5 kgs and he refuses to have semi solid foods…he prefers only blended puree or paste type foods..he isn’t interested much in crawling and has sat up directly..
please advise what would be the ideal weight at 1 year for him based on his birth weight?
pr says
Hi Dear,
Your baby’s weight is completely normal. Baby’s weight has to be thrice his body weight during the 1st birthday. That doesn’t mean that it has to be perfectly the same way. Any digit is okay if the baby is active and healthy. Try to gradually change the consistency from paste to semi solid dear. It’s nice that the baby crawls actively. Each and every baby is different dear. Just encourage him and support from back when he tries to push himself up. Encourage him a lot and be ready for the day of chasing 🙂

Hi doctor. My daughter is 2years 1month but her weight is 9.5kg only..Her birth weight is 2.9kg. Her weight is not at all increasing…whether this weight is normal for her age? and also for past one week she is not at all eating any food only water and milk she is drinking. I dont know what to do? Please suggest me why she is not eating?
pr says
Hello Priya,
Many babies or even toddlers go through a passing stage of refusing solids and favoring milk—either from the breast, or formula. This preference is likely due to the ease and familiarity of sucking from the breast or bottle versus the hard work of swallowing solid food. As long as your baby gets the nutrients she needs during this phase, there’s no real cause for concern.
Here’s how to keep her healthy and encourage her to return to solids:
1. Feed enough breast milk 2. For picky solid-food eaters, stick with foods that pack the most nutritional punch in a small volume. Best choices are avocado, yogurt, tofu, eggs, veggies (such as carrots and squash) 3. Perhaps your baby is trying to tell you that she wants an upgrade in cuisine! Give her more finger foods (https://goo.gl/SsEfoC)Just let her eat with her hands and clean up when she’s finished. 4. Continue to put a wide variety of foods in front of your child and then TOTALLY IGNORE what she does with the food. No comments, no begging, no cajoling 5. The important thing is not to react or turn it into an emotional issue or a power struggle. Then you will get a picky eater for sure!
And as for gaining weight as long as your child is active and completing her milestones and chores on time then there is nothing to worry about her weight but you can try feeding her foods like Egg, Milk, Banana’s, Health Drinks, Health mixes, Dry Fruits, Oats, Ragi, Coconut oil, Olive oil, Peach, Avocado, Peas, Potato, Sweet Potato etc can be fed for gaining weight and along with these you can feed your daughter our Weight gaining foods the list of foods are given in the link https://goo.gl/6T1pYi

Hi Whinny, thanks for asking us. I advice you to not add cow’s milk to your baby’s diet until 1 year age. There is no need to be tensed, just follow your doctor’s advice. Each baby is different and reach their milestones at diferent times. Just take care to keep her healthy and active and she will be fine, you need not worry about her weight.

Hi doc
My daughters birth weight was 3. 4 kg and now after 7 weeks she weighs 4.1 kg.
She s mostly on breastfeeding and on formula top feed.
She’s an active baby
Is that normal weight at this time or should we show it to pediatrician.
The general checkup for pediatrician said no worries with weight.
Need advise

Absolutely dear, no worries at all. As long as baby is taking breastfeed nicely, all is good.

I am Gladis from Mumbai. My baby’s birth weight was 3.7 kg. Now she is 50 days old, her present weight is 4.2 kg. Is this normal..? Should my baby gain more weight.? Please reply
Dr Hemapriya says
Gladis, how is the baby otherwise and has the pediatric mentioned anything specific? If the pediatric doesn’t find anything alarming, it is fine, some babies gradually pick on weight. Continue to breast feed.
Padma Venkatraman says
Hello Doc,
Loved the article. Simple and helpful.
My situation is quite the opposite to what people have been posting. Baby Girl was 2.4kg at birth. She just turned 4 months this week and weighs 6.24kg! She is exclusively and directly breastfed. She is active and pee-poo counts are fine. Sleeps a less though. Should I be concerned? What should I do?
Dr Hemapriya says
Well, there is nothing much to worry as she is exclusively on breast feed. Just that you can only feed on demand and take an opinion from her pediatric too who can reassure.
Coxy Cole says
Hello Doc,
Very succinctly elucidated write-up. My Daughter was 2.3kg at birth…. She looked so tiny. She’s 6 weeks old today and she weighs 5kg. Should I be concerned about her weight? She doesn’t look so chubby

Hi Mam,
My baby boy is in 18th month.. His weight is 10kg, In want to know the height of my baby at 18th month?? I have seen WHO Chart for weight.. but i couldn’t understand the 3rd, 15th and median column… can you please help me out…
Thanks…
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Hema, the height of your baby has to be between 77.2 to 87.3 according to the WHO height chart for 18 month old boy. You need not worry if it is lesser or higher as the chart is only a guide and each child is different. Your boy has the ideal median weight for 18 month old at 10 kg. The 3rd column means that 3% of normal children will be less than that weight, 15th means 15% of normal kids will be lesser and median is that 50% of the children are below the weight.

Dr Hemapriya says

Sometimes the baby may not be crying for milk but uneasy with the holding position or otherwise. Check this and her birth weight was not too less, many babies are born with that weight and will eventually be very healthy. So do not worry much about that.

Dr Hemapriya says
Hi,
Nearly 80% of the mails I receive every day are about babies’ weight, particularly about how to know if they are underweight and what to do if that is the case. Being chubby isn’t necessarily a sign of good health, since an obese baby is prone to several health problems throughout his life. As long as your baby’s diet is adequate and balanced you don’t have to worry about his weight.
My mantra is always :
” As long as the baby is active and healthy, there is no need to worry about the weight gain”
However, it is important to keep an eye on a baby’s weight, since being either underweight or overweight can put the baby at risk of many illnesses. So here is an article that can help you to know if your baby is in ideal range in height and weight.
How to know whether my baby is underweight or overweight?
If Underweight how can I increase my baby weight with healthy diet?
It is important to remember that if you’ve had a premature baby or multiples, the standard numbers may not apply, and it’s best to consult your paediatrician in such cases. In any case, these numbers are not set in stone and will vary from baby to baby. Even siblings can show different patterns in gaining weight; it doesn’t matter as long as the baby is healthy, active and developing normally otherwise.
