One of the most read posts is the ” Homemade Cerelac Powder for Babies or SathuMaavu powder for Babies” It is a very easy to make and simple version of the Health Mix powder.
I had made this while waiting for my mom to prepare the sprouted version of the Homemade Cerelac Powder.
Though both are nutritious and weight gaining food for babies, Sprouted version has the edge of being loaded with proteins than the normal easy SathuMaavu Powder for Babies.
Why Sprouting is good for Babies?
1. Sprouting helps increase the nutritional value of the grain.
2. Sprouting process makes it easier for the body to absorb nutrients especially Iron, Zinc and Vitamin C¹

How to sprout the ingredients for Homemade cerelac or SathuMaavu Powder ?
The following grains can be sprouted
- Ragi
- Green Gram
- Black Gram
- Chickpeas
- Cowpeas
- Jowar
- Horsegram
- Wheat
- Corn
Steps
1. Rinse all the ingredients separately to remove debris or stones.
2. Soak them in water overnight or atleast 8 hours.
3. Drain and rinse all the grains separately.
4. The grains can be tied in a soft cotton cloth like below and place the individual bundles in a tray in a dry place.
5. After 8 to 10 hours you can see small sprouts from the grains. If you want longer sprouts they can be left for a longer period.
Sprouted Grains like Ragi will be moist and little bit sticky to touch, you don’t have to be worried about it. If you detect a putrid smell or very sticky and greasy texture of the sprouted grains, it is better to discard them.
Please Note – Sprouting depends upon the climatic conditions and also on the type of grain, some may take longer than others.
Safety Precaution for sprouting the Grains
The SafetyFood.org and FDA cautions that ” Seeds and beans need warm and humid climate to sprout, these conditions are also ideal for the growth of bacteria like Salmonella, Listeria and Ecoli “.
To reduce this risk, FDA advices cooking the sprouts thoroughly before consumption, in this recipe we are roasting the sprouted ingredients thoroughly to prevent risk of infection.
Drying the Sprouted Ingredients.
Dry the Sprouted ingredients in sun for a day.
Roasting the Ingredients
1. After drying the sprouted grains, each should be dry roasted well separately.
2. The other ingredients like dry fruits, sago, fried gram, Ajwain to be dry roasted individually.
3. Cool all the ingredients.
Making the Powder
After all the ingredients have been roasted, with dry ginger it can be powdered in a Power Mill, as unlike the easy sathumaavu mix, they cannot be powdered at home.
No time to prepare this powder at home? Don’t worry, we prepare it hygienically and ship it to your doorstep

Hi mam,
My baby is 9 months old. Before ordering have doubt.
1. I didn’t give many of ingredients before ,like cow peas, peanut, bajra, horse gram to check allergy. Can I use this health mix powder.
2. Is health mix powder cause constipation and digestion.
3. Many of them told we should not use badam skin. Is it harmful to give with that.
Thanks in advance
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Durga,
Yes, you can introduce sathumaavu, but while introducing give little and then gradually increase the quantity. It will not cause constipation. But every baby is unique and hence it’s important to check your baby’s comfortability. Almond peel is not toxic but contains cellulose and therefore difficult
for few babies to digest. And hence ayurveda recommends eating peeled almonds.

Hello my baby is 10 days shy to 1 yr, have been giving her Sathumevu sprouted and millet for about 15days now. Is there a possibility that baby develops constipation if given sathu everyday? Am I suppose to give her sathu every alternate day, will it still help in weight gain? As of now I give her around 2.5 tablespoons with a carrot puree. Would appreciate a little help, on the same.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Priyanka,
In some babies constipation can be seen if sathumaavu or any other new nutritious food is given carrot is also one of the constipation causing food. So my request for you to is to feed ample of water, juices or make the porridge a bit liquidy so as to avoid constipation. You can also include prunes puree in it,and instead of providing normal water you can feed zeera water or ajwain water can be fed to your child. Also in your cooking you can put liberal use of ginger, garlic and asafoetida these will help in your constipation problem. Some of the home remedies for constipation is provided below for your reference – https://bit.ly/3hPtbDg
It will not affect weight gain in any way after eating a wholesome nutritious meal your child should have some rest after meal this will help in your child’s growth and weight gain dear. If your child is active then the nutrition will be used up as energy.

Arpita Roy-Gamji says
Hello Hema!
I am about to prepare this sprouted version of the mix and have few questions to feed my 8.5 month bub:
1) are dry fruits mandate?
2) What is the ideal time to feed her this?
3) Is 2 tbsp in 2 cups of powder enough, this will result in it to be 100 or 120 ml. Is it ok?
4) How many times a week can this be given to the little one?
Thanks so much 🙂
Arpita Roy-Gamji says
Also, can only fruit purees be added to increase sweetness as I wont be adding any sugar or salt until 1 year? can veggies be added too, like sweet potato, potato, carrot, pumpkin etc?
pr says
Hi,
Yes, fruit and vegetable purees can be added as a natural sweetener.
pr says
Hi Arpita,
1. Adding dry fruits is not mandate.
2. While introducing it for the first time, do it only in day time (first half of the day) and you can feed it at any convenient time when baby gets used to the new food.
3. You can change the measurement a per the required consistency and quantity.
4. It can be given daily or thrice in a week.
Hope all your queries are answered 🙂

Hi
My baby now 8 months
I am following few of ur baby foods and
I prepared this powder myself at home
Few of my relatives saying milk feeding (mother’s/formula) 5 times a day and only once in a day any solid food is enough for a baby UpTo 12 months.
If we start solids from six months and two to three daily to baby before one year, there will be many problems in later stages of their development itseems.
Is it true?
Can u plz clarify me
I will be waiting for ur reply

Your baby needs 3 meals and 2 snacks in a day dear. Breast milk is also necessary. It can be given in between as per the demand. Please check our 8 months baby food chart for nutritious and balance diet plan. Link – https://goo.gl/kTtdoV

Hi Hema,
I have prepared Sprouted home made cerelac taking this post as reference. When I started to feeding my son who is 8 months old, he is pooping 3,4 times a day. Previously It was like once a day or in 2 days. Although the stool is not watery. Is there any problem. And can you share the different recipes other than porridge using this mix. Thanks.

Hi Sahithya,
It’s completely normal dear. It’s because of the peristaltic wave which pushes the stools in the rectum. It happens only after digestion, so no need to worry. Please find link below with sathumaavu recipes. Hope baby likes it:)

Nikhila says
Hi Hema,
Making this powder for my 8 month lo. Have some questions.
1. The corn we use, is it the same that we use for Popcorn?
2. If ground nut powder has to be kept separately and added while preparing the porridge then whats the quantity of the ground nut powder to be added?
3. Should Dry fruits powder also kept separately as the shelf life for it is 1 month as you mentioned in one your post. Or can it be mixed along with rest of the powders and stored in the refrigerator for as long as the saathu maavu lasts?
4. Can you tell me the max duration that the grains can be left in water for soaking and also in the cloth for sprouting?
5. What is the reason behind soaking and sprouting them individually? My MIL feels we can do it all together and i want to follow what you suggested… 🙁
Sorry for so many questions..
P.S: I love your website and the fact that it puts so many moms like me at ease 🙂

I wanted to knw if its ok to give baby all these powder day wise or need to finish one powder first and then start next powder.

And from past 3 days I am giving this health mix powder in the afternoon.
When I start to feed her, he licks the porridge and have it.
I followed the procedure step by step mentioned in this recipe and prepared it.

Geethanjali says
Hi,
Last year I prepared this recipe and I’m planning again for this summer.
Last year when I went for milling, I gave dry fruits separately and it became paste like texture, so I had to discard a major portion of dry fruits.
How should we give for milling, should we mix all the ingredients together or some should be milled separately. Milling instruction is not very clear to me.
Also, I’m planning to increase the quantity of rice, wheat and ragi to 400gms keeping the rest as it is. Will this be fine?
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi,
Sorry for the delay in replying, what can be done, grind the dry fruits alone in mixie at home to powder and in the mill you can add them last, yes it is ok, there might be a small difference in taste though
Aamna says
Do we have to dry roast corn directly or wash it and sun dry and then dry roast it???
One more question can we add sugar,if not fruit puree ,or jaggery would be good??? What do yu suggest??

2. The whole wheat is enough
3.No need to wash if you buy from a trusted brand
4. No need to soak sago as it will become sticky and difficult to roast
5. The amount in the sprouted cerelac is very small and so there will not be any ill effects, provided you try them separately
6. Directly roasted
Veena says
Thnx for d instant response.. I hav another query so do v need to roast quinoa or oats .how much shud v roast it..Or v can directly grind it without roasting it..

Amrutha says
Hi Hema, I have been using this sprouted powder and other cereals powder like individually rice cereal, wheat cereal and ragi which was prepared by me as per your chart for my kid. my query is my 11 month kid always prefer to eat only the porridge made from these powder…my kid doesn’t even prefer to eat boiled vegetables or rice or dal..but the same if dry roasted excelt veggies and thru powdered form she eats happily.. In a day 2 to 3 servings will be only these porridges she eats..is this OK if she doesn’t eat boiled cooked food and only prefer these powder on all days ?. I keep trying often with rice , dal , carrot in puree form but hardly she eat a spoon and starts spitting..at the same time if these spouted porridge is given she eats. Please advice on is this OK or is she lacking on nutrients..? My second query is while preparing porridge I do add 1/4th tea spoon ghee per serving..so daily 3/4th tea spoon ghee she may eat.is this OK if consumed in this quantity or shud I reduce adding ghee? Also she licks every other food that we elders eat at home but doesn’t prefer to swallow any bit of any other food..be it idly, dosa, chapathi, rice, sweets, snacks anything…every one at home is pointing at me as because of eating that powder porridge she doesn’t eat anything…though other food which we eat ,even we try to feed on a daily or two days once basis my lo is not liking anything..how to make her eat all normal veg boiled food, vegetables and fruits..? Kindly reply … Thanks in Advance.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Amrutha,
I can perfectly understand what your are going through, though these powders are healthy, it is not wise to give this the whole day, you have to include solid food in her diet too, try introducing soft finger foods such as boiled carrot in a playful way, give it to her while playing or if any elder sibling is there, ask her to eat meals with them so that she takes food
Sandhya says
Hi HemaPriya,
My daughter has just completed 7 months. I am planning to give the home made cerelac to her.
I have some queries
1)which one is better ,the normal one better or the sprouted ones?
2)Which is easily digestable.?
3)I want to make sure that it is digestable as she has constipation problem.
4)Is it ok if i add the dry fruits while preparing the mix? Are they digestable. But I am very much keen yo give them as they r very healthy and help her in weight gain.
5)As u said that that we need to add 2 tbsp mix with 1 cup water? How many ml is 1 cup?
6)Instead of mixing the fruit puree can I mix some veggie puree or rasam or sambar or dal pani?
7) At what time should I feed her ? Break fast or lunch or dinner?Usually I feed her idli, suji upma for breakfast. Lunch would be dal n rice. Dinner would be fruit puree.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Sandhya,
I am really very sorry for the delayed response
Answering your questions
1. Both are equally good with the sprouted one more healthier as sprouting increases the bio availability of the nutrients
2. Both are easily digestible, but it varies between different babies, try for your baby once and check how he reacts
3. Please follow the 3 day rule and check
4. Yes you can add ( though they also have the dry fruits in them)
5. One cup is 240 ml
6. Yes you can add veg puree too
7. When you try it first, try it for breakfast, then you can give during any time
Hope it helps

I tried this powder with my 10 months old baby girl and she liked it. The kind of satisfaction you get, when you see ur baby having such a nutritious food, is just beyond words. I had ordered this powder online and it came in a neat packaging, within 5 days of placing the order. Such quick delivery does matter when it comes to baby foods. I have also ordered ragi-moong dal powder but I am yet to try that with my baby.
Just one suggestion Doc…if u cud give instructions on your packages as to how to use a particular powder…it will be even better.
Keep up the good work Doc Mom 🙂
Dr Hemapriya says
Thank you Preksha for your kind words 🙂 Yes we will definitely work on creating clear instructions

i have soaked all the ingredients in water and while going thru the recipe once again, i realised that jowar(sorghum) in picture is probably the pearl millet(bajra).Jowar i recieved from big basket is somewhat white and thick than as shown in picture. i m bit confused that is it okay to use this for my 5+ month old baby( i m planning to give this to her when she will be 6+ months old). can we use both the millet without any problem to baby

Hi Hema, my son is 10 months now and I have been giving him the Homemade Cerelac since he was 6 months. Now I still have a big lot in my refrigerator which is very slowly consuming since now I give normal family food to him. Can you tell some alternate use of the powder or some variations to convert it into finger food for baby or other more interesting food!
Also, if I take this powder on travel can I just add hot water and mix and feed to him?

Hi garima,
You can make laddu, dry roast the homemade health mix till nice aroma arises then add ghee and jaggery and roll them into balls, you can make cookies with the health mix too

nithya says
Hi hema,
Glad to see this recipe! I live in Germany where the current temperature is around 20°C.Can I dry the sprouts inside spread on a dry cloth? and also I dont have access to power mill to grind. Shall I grind it for a long time in my mixer grinder (i have preethi blue leaf) or do u suggest i go with the non sprouted version? please let me know.
thanks in advance,
nithya
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Nithya,
yea you can , take care that the sprouts are well dried and crisp, Yes you can grind in mixer, after grinding seive it to fine powder with a fine seive
nithya says
Hi hema,
thanks for the reply. just curious to know, what happens if it is not finely powdered? if i cook it for little longer will that be ok?
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Nithya,
If not finely powdered, there will coarse grains, though may cook good will not be palatable for the baby
nithya says
Hi hema,
i just made one batch of this powder. i have few doubts…
1. i dry roasted the peanuts and put it in the mixer, it resulted in a paste….guess its the oily nature of the nut. i have kept it seperately. shall i add that or make another batch of groundnut powder?
2. the dry fruits also were not very fine. they are a bit sticky. i mixed it with the main mix. you had mentioned in your dry fruit powder recepie that the shelf life of it is 1 month. now we have mixed the same to the sathu maavu, will it spoil the shelf life of this powder?
3. when i made the kanji, it turned out bitter. i added jagerry while making too. why is this? is there something i could do?
4. i didnt have ragi to sprout. can i directy mix ready made ragi powder to this?
5. do we need to wash the rice and dry before roasting? i directly roasted it.
sorry for so many questions!!
regards
nithya
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Nithya,
Sorry for the late reply
1. Keep the groundnut paste separately and add when you make the porridge
2. Keep the whole lot of sathu maavu in fridge
3. Try adding Mishri sugar
4. No, don’t mix readymade ragi powder, as they wont be very fine powder, and everything will come undigested in poop
5. It is ok, no need to wash it
Hope your queries are cleared, do update me how your sathu maavu turned out
Helen says
Hi Hema
My baby’s poop is greenish black semisolid type after having this. Is it because of the green gram and back urad dal colour r is it sum thing wrong. Also it was slightly grainy, the exact texture wat I fed him. Does it mean it’s not digested. Wat r the symptoms to find tat it’s not suiting apart from the poop colour because even if I give banana it is greenish yellow. Am really confused to judge food tolerance based on the colour of poop.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Helen
yes sometimes if it is not digested or the baby had diarrhea it will be excreted as such, you dont have to worry unless he is passing frequent motions, you don’t have to judge food tolerance by poop, sometimes it might not be accurate,as long as he is comfortable and not cranky after feeding, you don’t have to worry
pallavi singh says
Hi Hema ji

Dr Hemapriya says
Thank you Aly, Glad your so liked it 🙂
Helen says
I did the same way but dint give in powermill I did it in mixie, sieved, again ground and powder is fine. Is tis fine Hema or should I definitely give in powermill coz am worried it shouldn’t affect my sons health. But trust me it’s a really tedious process. Can we store in fridge for a year. I. Sundried it for 3 days.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi helen, if it is a fine powder, then you don’t have to worry, sometimes it doesnt result in a fine powder, so i suggested the powder, since many lenders don’t have the capacity to powder it
Deepa says
Hi , you hv mentioned corn in the recepi but u haven’t used it
Dr Hemapriya says
