Sago is an excellent first food for babies as it is easy to digest. Moreover, as it is high in calories, it is perfect to help babies gain weight. This Sabudana khichdi recipe for babies is a simple preparation in which soaked pearls of sago are stir fried with cooked vegetables and spices to create a complete and tasty meal for babies. This recipe is ideal for babies after 9 months of age. Please note that salt and sugar are to be given only to babies above 1 year of age.
Sabudana Khichdi Recipe for Babies
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup Sago pearls
- 1 small potato, boiled and chopped
- 1 small carrot, boiled and chopped
- ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
- ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
- ½ tablespoon ghee
- Small bunch of coriander leaves
Method:
1. Wash and soak the sago pearls in water just enough to cover the pearls for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, drain the excess water if any and cover the pearls for 3-4 hours or preferably overnight. The sago pearls should be non-sticky and soft before making the khichdi.
2. In a non-stick pan, heat ghee and crackle cumin seeds.
3. Once the seeds crackle, add the boiled and chopped potato and carrot and stir fry for 1-2 minutes.
4. Now add the soaked sago pearls and stir fry for 2 minutes.
5. Add warm water to the khichdi and cover. Let it cook until done.
6. Add chopped coriander leaves and black pepper powder and mix well.
7. Turn off the flame. Add lime juice if desired. Serve the sabudana khichdi warm with some curd to your baby.
The starch in sago gives it a wonderful taste and a great change to the usual baby food. You can try making all sorts of delicious dishes with sago like sabudana kheer , sabudana khichadi, sago porridge etc. If your making this for your toddler, you can add a pinch of salt if you like. Do taste it and see, you might just find your new comfort food as well!

Is it safe for 9 mo.old baby ?
If my baby doesn’t have teeth, how will she be able to chew sabudana ?

Yes, it’s completely safe for 9 months old dear. Even though baby has no teeth, the gums are strong enough to chew the basic foods.
