Just about the time Holi is about to arrive, we start hearing about the harmful effects of chemical colors. And everything you hear is true as well – these colors are toxic to us and our planet. But why do you have to pay for toxicity, when you can make 100% sustainable Holi colors right at home? Yes, here is a recipe for 3 ingredient natural Holi colors – made using vegetables! So not are you saving money, your skin and the planet, but you’re also making the post-celebration cleanup a lot easier!
3 Ingredient Natural Holi Colors
Ingredients:
For Pink powder:
- 1 small Beetroot
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup water
For Green powder:
- 10-15 Spinach leaves
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup water
For Yellow powder:
- 3/4 cup chick pea flour / Besan
- 3-4 tablespoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 cup water or as required
Method:
1. To make the green color, boil the spinach leaves for 5 minutes in water. Drain and grind without adding water to get a fine puree.
2. Add this puree to 1/2 cup whole wheat flour in a bowl and mix well.
3. Make a smooth paste using 1/2 cup water.
4. Spread the paste on a large plate and dry in sun for 2 days. Scrap out the dried paste from the plate and powder in a grinder jar.
5. To make the yellow color, add turmeric to besan in a mixing bowl and make a smooth paste using water.
6. Spread the paste on a plate and allow it to dry completely in sunlight.
7. Scrap the dried paste and make powder using grinder
8. For the pink color, peel 1 small beetroot and add the chunks to a grinder jar. Pulse 3-4 times without adding water.
9. Add the beetroot puree to a bowl with whole wheat flour. Mix well and adding water making a fine paste.
10. Spread the paste evenly on a plate and dry in sunlight for 2 days.
12. Scrap out the dried paste from the plate and powder using a grinder jar.
13. Store the colored powders in air tight jars.
You can also add rose water while making the paste. If you do not have ample of sunlight available or no time to sundry, spread the vegetable purees on a ceramic plate and microwave for 2-3 minutes on high. Scrape out the dried paste and powder it. And if any of the powder is leftover, no problem – you can turn them into face packs, by mixing with milk or rose water. Now how’s that for a 100% sustainable Holi!!!!
Natural Holi Colors made with 3 ingredients
