Are you one of those Moms who struggles with feeding her toddler milk? Well, you’re not alone!! All parents agree that milk is calcium rich and necessary to be added in toddler’s diet. Unfortunately, most toddlers have other plans! While some kids don’t have a problem drinking plain milk, many others resist. But we have a recipe that’ll overcome this resistance – Makhana Kheer!
Makhana kheer is a sweet pudding made from fox nut seeds and milk. Makhana or lotus seeds / foxnut seeds are rich in calcium and protein. They are popular in North India and consumed mostly during fasts. Makhana kheer is made both as a fasting food and it is served as naivedhyam to Lord Krishna on Janmashtami.

Method:

2. Remove the roasted makhana and allow it to cool down. Meanwhile to the same pan add milk and heat. Add dry dates powder to it and cook until the milk reduces and thickens.
3. Reserve some roasted makhana for garnishing, and crush the rest. You can powder them in grinder jar too.
4. Add powdered makhana to the reduced sweetened milk. Stir well and cook the kheer for another 2-3 minutes.
5. Next tip in the slivered almonds and pistachio and put off the flame.
6. Garnish with more nuts, dried rose petals and reserved roasted makhana and serve.
This kheer is best consumed on the same day, and tastes delicious warm or chilled. What’s more, it’s rich in calcium and protein. Little Moppet Foods dry dates powder sweetens the kheer naturally. Kasturi Thakur says
Can the makhana kheer be made of formula milk?…will there be any change in procedure then
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Kasturi,
Yes, formula milk should not be cooked with makhana. so you can make thick kheer using water and then add formula milk when it’s in room temperature.
Priyanka says
