Millet pongal is a traditional rice dish that is commonly prepared during the harvest season in Tamil Nadu, India. It is an important part of Tamil culture and tradition, and it is usually served on special occasions like festivals, marriages, or other family gatherings. Millet pongal has many health benefits and is good for the heart as well as your baby’s overall health.
Kodo Millet Pongal Recipe
Ingredients:
- Varagu/Kodo millet – 1 cup
- Moong dal – 2 tbsp
- Pepper – 1 tsp
- Jeera – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – 1 spring
- Turmeric powder – a pinch
- Water
- Ginger – 1 tbsp finely chopped
- Ghee – 1 tbsp
- Cashews – 5 splitted
Instructions:
1. Wash and soak koda millet and moongdal for 1 hour.
2. Heat a small pressure cooker with ghee and add pepper, jeera. Let it splutter.
3. Add curry leaves.
4. Add ginger, turmeric and saute.
5. Add moong dal and saute.
6. Add Kodo millet / Varagu and saute.
7. Add water and bring it to a boil.
8. Pressure cook it for 3-4 whistles in medium flame.
9. Heat a tadka pan with ghee.
10. Once the ghee is heated, add cashews and fry it till golden brown.
11. Add the ghee fried cashews to the Pongal once pressure is released from the cooker and mix well. Yummy & healthy millet pongal for kids is ready to serve.
NOTE: For babies below 1 year ginger paste and pepper powder can be used.
