For many of us, the minute someone says Ganesh Chaturthi, the next thought is of yummy little modaks arranged on a tray! You can’t blame them too – modaks are irresistible!
While modaks are a traditional festival special, there are many ways you can modify it to make it more kid-friendly. You know kids – they can be super fussy and constantly demanding for different kinds of snacks and sweets. That’s why we’ve decided to give the basic modak recipe a twist by making it with ragi!
This is not just a special occasion recipe; this can also be made as a snack for your school-going kid. The health benefits of ragi are well known – they are rich in iron and calcium. Now your kids can get all these benefits as they enjoy their festive treats!
Kid-friendly Ragi Modak Recipe
Ingredients:
- Ragi flour – 1 cup
- Rice flour – ½ cup
- Water -1 cup
- Jaggery– ½ cup
- Desiccated coconut – ½ cup
- Cardamom powder- ¼ tbsp.
- Roasted gram powder – ½ cup
- Dry fruits powder – 2 tbsp.
- Modak mould
- Ghee as required
- Saffron strands (optional)

Method:
1. Boil water and add a pinch of salt to it (if required).
2. For dough – In a large bowl add a cup of ragi flour, half a cup of rice flour and mix well.
3. Add the boiled water in the flour mixture.
4. At first mix well with laddle, followed by the hand to form a lump free dough.
5. Knead it into a soft dough and keep it aside.
6. For filling – In a bowl add Jaggery, desiccated coconut, roasted gram, dry fruits powder, cardamom/Elaichi powder and mix well.
7. Now take Modak mould and grease it with ghee on all the sides.
8. Add small portions of flour dough into the mold and spread evenly.
9. Add stuffing into the mould and close it with small portion of flour dough.
10. Gently unmold the modak and add saffron strands for garnishing.
11. Now steam cook the raw modak using steamer or idly cooker for 10 minutes.
12. Healthy ragi modak is now ready to serve.
Being made of ragi, this modak recipe is already nutritious, but adding the dry fruits powder takes it up a notch! The sweet smell of the elaichi and fresh coconut will grab the attention of fussy toddlers and you can be sure that they’re all going to be gobbled up in no time!
