Thandai is an Indian Summer cooler, popular in Northern India. It is a milk based beverage flavored with nuts and spices, which is very refreshing and delectable. Though thandai is associated with festivals like Holi and Mahashivratri, it can be enjoyed throughout the summer months. Instant Mini Thandai for Kids is a refreshing drink not just for kids, it can also be consumed by adults.
This Instant mini thandai can also be given to toddlers as it not only cools the body but also helps in digestion and aids good sleep. We can keep this mini thandai mix ready at hand. All you need to do then is to add it to milk, bring it to a boil, strain and serve. Mishri or rock sugar/ candy sugar can be used to sweeten the milk before adding this mini thandai mix.
Instant Mini Thandai for Kids
Ingredients for the mini thandai powder:
- 2 tablespoon fennel seeds
- 2-3 black peppercorn
- 1-2 green cardamom
- 1/4 nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon dried rose petals
- 4-5 almonds
Ingredients for thandai drink:
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon rock candy/ sugar candy/mishri
- 1/2 teaspoon thandai powder
Method for preparing thandai powder:
1.Dry roast the black peppercorn, nutmeg, green cardamom and almonds on low flame until aromatic. Dry roasting the spices and nuts helps to release the essential oils in them.
2. Next add fennel seeds and dried rose petals and roast for another 2-3 minutes on low flame. Keep stirring to ensure the seeds and nuts do not burn.
3. Remove the roasted nuts, spices and rose petals on a plate to cool down.
4. On cooling, transfer them to a grinder jar and powder.
5. Store this thandai powder in air tight container in a refrigerator and use as required.
Method to make thandai
- Heat milk in a sauce pan.
2. Once it boils, add 1 teaspoon of mishri / sugar candy /rock candy. Keep stirring until the rock candy dissolves completely.
3. Lastly add 1/2 teaspoon of thandai powder and give a quick stir.
4. Cook for 1 minute or so and put off the flame.
5. When the thandai is warm, strain and serve your baby in sips.
This thandai mix remains good for a month or so, but it’s always better to make it in small batches which will suffice for 10-15 days. Organic dried rose petals can be used to make this delicious thandai. The fresh aroma of the rose petals and the nuts is tempting enough to want anyone crave a glass of thandai in the heat!
