Dal ka paani is a beloved and popular choice as a first food for babies. It holds a special place in their early nutrition, providing them with essential nourishment. However, recent studies have shown that plain dal ka paani may not offer sufficient nutrition on its own. To enhance its nutritive value and make it even more delightful, you can simply add a clove of garlic to this cherished dish.
Imagine the aromatic aroma of garlic infusing the dal ka paani as it cooks. The kitchen fills with a comforting and enticing scent, creating an atmosphere that awakens the senses and stirs the appetite. The gentle warmth and richness that garlic brings to the dish take it to a whole new level of flavor, making it an enjoyable experience for both you and your baby.
But garlic is more than just a flavor enhancer. It has been celebrated for its potential health benefits for centuries. While the specific benefits of garlic are still being explored by scientists, it has been associated with antibacterial and antiviral properties. These properties may contribute to supporting your baby’s immune system and overall well-being. However, it’s important to remember that individual responses to garlic may vary, and it’s always wise to follow the three-day rule when introducing new ingredients to your baby’s diet.
Introducing garlic to your baby’s dal ka paani not only adds a delightful taste but also provides an opportunity to expose them to new flavors and expand their palate from an early age. As they experience the aromatic richness and subtle complexity of garlic, they begin to develop a curiosity for diverse tastes, setting the stage for a lifelong appreciation of wholesome and delicious food.
As you embark on this exciting journey of introducing new foods to your baby, consider the addition of garlic as a way to create memorable mealtime moments. Let the flavors dance on their taste buds and enjoy the shared experience of discovering the wonders of food together. Remember, each step of this journey is an opportunity to nurture your baby’s growth and create lasting memories around the dinner table.
Benefits of Garlic in Dal ka Paani
Garlic: A Natural Fighter Against Infections
Garlic, with its powerful compound called allicin, becomes a formidable ally in safeguarding your baby’s health. Research suggests that garlic is highly effective in combating life-threatening infections, particularly in critically ill infants (see reference 5). Thanks to its antibacterial and antiviral properties, garlic acts as a natural warrior, assisting the body in fighting against harmful microorganisms and bolstering the immune system.
Reducing Inflammation with Garlic
Inflammation can cause discomfort and hinder your baby’s well-being. However, the anti-inflammatory properties of garlic come to the rescue. By reducing inflammation within the body, garlic helps maintain a healthy balance, promoting overall wellness and supporting your little one’s development.
Allicin: The Antioxidant Powerhouse
The allicin present in garlic acts as a powerful antioxidant, providing protection against oxidative stress. Antioxidants play a crucial role in neutralizing harmful free radicals and protecting delicate cells from damage. By incorporating garlic into dal ka paani, you introduce a natural source of antioxidant goodness, contributing to your baby’s well-being.
A Bounty of Essential Nutrients
Garlic is not only flavorful but also nutritious. Rich in vitamin C, it aids in strengthening the immune system and supports healthy growth in your baby. Additionally, garlic contains valuable amounts of selenium, manganese, and vitamin B6, which play essential roles in various bodily functions and promote optimal development.
Cooking Garlic for Maximum Effect
To make the most of garlic’s beneficial properties, proper cooking techniques are key. Always chop or crush garlic before using it in dal ka paani. This helps release its active compounds, including allicin, maximizing its potential benefits. After chopping or crushing, allow the garlic to stand for approximately 10 minutes before cooking. This waiting period enables the allicin compound to reach its peak concentration, enhancing the impact of garlic in your dish.
Don’t Forget the Three-Day Rule
When introducing any new food to your baby, it’s crucial to follow the three-day rule. This rule allows you to observe for any potential allergic reactions or adverse effects, ensuring your baby’s safety and well-being. By introducing new ingredients gradually, you can monitor their response and make informed decisions about their dietary choices.
Incorporating the Magic of Garlic into Dal ka Paani
With its remarkable infection-fighting properties, anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant power, and nutrient-rich composition, garlic elevates dal ka paani to a whole new level of nourishment. By following proper cooking techniques and adhering to the three-day rule, you can introduce the benefits of garlic to your baby’s culinary journey, creating delicious and wholesome meals that contribute to their growth and development.

Marina says

Will cooking in pressure cooker compromise nutrition in any way? Pressure cooker cooks the dal and rice much better for baby for easy digestion, isn’t it?
Dr Hemapriya says
You can pressure cook it if that helps.

Hi HemaPriya,
While answering to query, you had mention, not to use pressure cooker to prepare rice water or dal ka pani. Is there any reason?
Thanks !!
Renu says
Hi Can I use steamer to prepare Dal ka pani or Rice? Thank you in advance
Akanksha says
Hi Dr. Hema!
I have just started the weaning of my 5.5 month old baby and your blog has really helped me. I wanted to ask do we need to follow the three day rule every time we introduce a new dal? Like I started with dehusked green moong dal and now if I want to start with toor dal, again the three day rule has to be followed? Thanks in advance!
Dr Hemapriya says
Dear Akansha,
Yes better follow the three day rule
Padma says
My baby poops a little after having “daal ka paani” and the doctor says we only have to worry about constipation and not baby bowel movement. Is this true ?
I feel my baby is not digesting the food and hence his bowel movement, anything I can do about it ?
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Padma,
It is a normal physiological process , so you don’t have to worry about that as long as he does not cry during potty or pass blood. As soon as the food reaches the stomach, it starts a peristaltic wave which pushes the stools in the rectum, the food what she eats will be in the stomach and will be expelled as stools only after digestion.
Kalpana says
Hi Hema,
Can I cook the rice in the cooker the same way and extract the water to feed my lil one? Can I use the same procedure for Dhall Pani also?
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Kalpana,
No it will not be good for the baby, you can cook as directed above
Bosky says
Hi Dr Hema,
Our baby is simply keeping her mouth shut with any solids. She only takes a piece of apple that she will gnaw with great interest, at times avacado. I tried dal ka paani today with no luck, mix vegetables puree without any luck, apple puree if I am lucky, no banana. He is going to be 10 months old next week. he started really well on solids at 6 months for 2.5 weeks and then caught an infection that caused him to throw up on 3 days and that was the end of his love for solids. At 6 months he would be coming after seeing the spoon but after throwups, he will simply keep his mouth shut.
Any advice?
Thanks,
Bosky
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Bosky,
Maybe he likes finger foods, as he is showing interest in apple and avacado, try introducing different types of Finger Foods
Bosky says
Hi Dr Hema,
Thanks for this – he just gags, chokes and then has a little throw up everytime he takes a small chunk of any food that is iffered as finger food. Then he refuses the same item – this happed with steamed carrot pieces- he was taking it yesterday until he gagged on one piece and had a mini throwup and that was it. I then tired with mushy piece of steamed beetroot and he was very interedted until it went to his mouth and then he started making funny sounds and moved his mouth away. Its really frustrating – the only thing he likes is gnawing on raw carrot and raw apple.
Worried mom…
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Bosky,
Give him some time, he will slowly start eating 🙂
Bosky says
Thanks Dr Hema. I really hope so. BTW
Dr Hemapriya says
All the best 🙂
