Start your little one’s journey into solid foods the right way with our 6 months Baby Food Chart! Includes healthy and nutritious Indian recipes too!
So your baby is 6 months old – congratulations, she’s ready to start solid foods! Many Moms eagerly wait for that moment when their little ones start eating new foods. It’s so much fun to watch the expressions on those little faces change as they taste new flavors!
Things to Remember before Weaning your Baby
Be sure that your baby is ready for starting solids by checking her physical developmental milestones. Please remember that at this age, breast milk is still a major part of your baby’s diet. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months of age, and breast milk to complement solids for the next year or more.
Make sure you are well prepared with all the essentials for weaning your baby.
Your baby’s immune system is still weak and she is vulnerable to all kinds of germ attacks. So, ensure that all your baby’s feeding utensils are absolutely clean and sterilized. If you’re confused about how to do it, then this video on how to sterilize feeding utensils for babies should help.
Initially, it can be difficult to know exactly how much solid food for a 6-month-old. You don’t really need a lot of solid food for your baby at this age. About 90 ml per feed twice a day should be enough to begin with. Before starting out, you may want to check our post on how to introduce solids to Baby for some useful tips and tricks.
Here is a look at the foods you can introduce this month:
Basic Tips for Feeding your 6 Month Old Baby:
- You can make any of the purees or porridge runny by adding breast milk or formula milk
- Thicker purees will help add calories
- Follow a routine to feed baby, like tying on the bib, putting him in his chair, etc.
- Continue to breastfeed on demand

Please note that these meal plans aren’t written in stone! This is just a guide that gives you an idea about what to feed your baby, when to feed and how much to feed. You can customize these meal plans to your baby’s convenience and routine. If she doesn’t like a food, wait a few weeks before introducing it again. Be patient, don’t expect your baby to polish off the plate at every meal! It’ll take another two months for her to completely finish the portions, so don’t try to force-feed the remaining food on the plate.
However, do consider the risk of food allergies. You can’t be sure if your baby is allergic to any food, so always follow the 3-Day Rule before introducing any new food to your baby. This will also help you rule out any foods that are causing indigestion in your baby.
How do you know that your baby has an allergy to a particular food?
If a food doesn’t suit your baby, your baby may present with the following symptoms:
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Vomiting
- Rashes
- Incessant Crying (due to stomach pain)
What to do if your baby is allergic to a particular food?
If your baby is allergic to a particular food, stop it immediately and restart it after 2 months. At every point, be sure to follow the 3-day rule – whether introducing a new food or reintroducing an old one. You can start a “Baby Food Diary” to keep track of your little one’s favorite recipes and specific food allergies.

My baby’s birth weight was 1.8kg and now she is 6.5 month old her weight is 5 kg. Her appetite is extremely low. She drinks 60 ml formula milk 5-6 times a day and whenever I offer her anything to eat she doesn’t want to eat.. I am very tensed.. how can I increase her appetite and weight?

Hi Sakshi,
Baby’s present weight is perfectly fine dear. It’s time to concentrate in introducing different nutritious foods to your baby. It’s okay if baby eats one or two spoons, that’s completely fine. You can stop when baby denies food and then feed after 2 hours. Gradually baby’s appetite would increase.

When can we start giving spinach puree to babies? Which spinach is best to introduce?
pr says
Hi,
Spinach can be introduced to babies around 6 to 7 months, but the oxalates and nitrates present in spinach might not be suitable for some babies. So it is recommended to introduce around 8 months of age. Any spinach, which your family eats can be given to your baby (with no salt).

Hello mam.My baby is passing green coloured stool from last 2 days twice daily. Is this the thing to worry about.
And mam when to start giving water to baby? My baby is 6 months 10 days old.

Hi,
Green stool is common in babies while getting introduced to new foods. So it’s not to be worried. You can feed the baby with water from 6 months. Water can be given in sips during feeding time and also find the baby cues and feed accordingly.

Hello Doctor,
Your food charts are very useful. During 1st week 3 day rulebhas been followed and only two purees have been introduced. But from second week new foods have been introduced on daily basis and on same day without following 3 day rule and the ingredients of the same are totally different from apple and carrot purees. Is it fine to follow in the same manner without 3 day rulre.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Yamini,
Thanks for the appreciation dear. 3 day rule has to be followed for all new ingredients. We have given you a wide variety of vegetable and fruit recipes to introduce from second week. Please select from them and go ahead with 3 day rule.

Hello doctor

Hello doctor
I’m mother 6 months old baby..I’m going to start solid food..in which position we make baby to feed food? For my daughter I gave by sitting in floor put baby on my legs and I feed.. I don’t know tat position s correct or not..Pls guide me position of feeding..
pr says
Hi Geetha,
Your feeding position is right dear, you can also try few more methods, Sit with crossed legs, keep the baby on your lap with head a little high and feed or stretch your legs, keep pillow (across) and make the baby lye on your leg facing you, pillow would help in keeping the head tilted and it will be comfortable to feed, or you can even make the baby sit with back support and feed. Follow whatever works the best for you 🙂
Sneha says
Hi Dr.Hema. Your chart is wonderful.my baby is going to complete 6th month in a week. I have a doubt regarding homemade cerlac which is not included in the chart. While giving purees when homemade cerlac is to be given? And what all the ingredients to be added in homemade cerlac

Ayesha says
Hi Hema,
I am wondering about the quantity of solid for my 6.5 months old. How much exactly should I give in case I am feeding him saathumaavu or ragi that I bought from your store. Also, in sooji kheer the recipe on your website calls for 1 cup sooji. Isn’t it a lot for for the baby? Your recipes are great but I am confused about the quantity being given, even for veg and fruit puree. Can you help me on this?
pr says
Sure dear, Quantity completely depends on you and your baby. You can trust your mother instinct while feeding. Please stop feeding when the baby shows signals of denial. If you feel that the quantity fed is less, you can feed again in 2 hours. We have to make sure that the tiny tummy is full 🙂 You can prepare by reducing the quantity of sooji as per your need.

Hi Hema,
My baby boy is turning 6 months on the 21st of this month. I have ordered 3 packs of your sathumaavu health mix. However, when I look at your chart it does not mention your health mix anywhere. When am supposed to give my baby this health mix? Also, shall I order less quantities as your health mix does not have preservatives, hence less shelf life.
Look forward to your reply.
Regards
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Ayesha, You can give your baby Sathumaavu after he is used to having simple purees and porridges. He should be used to having porridges like rice, ragi and wheat before starting sathumaavu. You can order according to your requirement, it has a shelf life of upto 4 months when kept outside and upto 6 months when refrigerated.

Hi
Your website is of great help.
My 6 month daughter is too eager to eat everything and asks for more quantities than mentioned and digests them also. I breast feed on demand but she demands bf even after having a proper solid meal. Should i continue giving both at the same time or should i increase the solids quantity for the two meals..
Dr Hemapriya says
Babies are unique in the ways they grow and adapt to food. I am glad she is reciprocating well to food diets, keep feeding as per demand and a little more than prescribed is okay if her tummy doesn’t feel filled.

Hi Hema,
While searching food recipes for my 7 month old daughter came across your site. Loved your site, it has so many recipes, the instruction are so clear and pictures make it more apt.
I have question regarding the storage of food. As I am a working mom so don’t get time to prepare the dishes on daily basis, is it fine if I make the purees and put in ice tray, freeze them and when needed thaw it and use for a week.
Thanks,
Priyanka
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Priyanka,
Thank you for your appreciation 🙂
Yes you can freeze food and use later, but be sure that you don’t refreeze the thawed food.

Hello Dr Hema,
Guy evening.
I recently subscribed to your website.
Lately I was searching for good home made recipes for infants. Very happy with the exhaustive list mentioned here.
I have 6 month old baby. I started solids at 5 months. Once ragi and one carrot puree. Rest all times breastfeeding.
My son is 8kg now. From 3 days he has cold. Blocked nose. Can you please suggest me any home remedies to overcome cold.
Can I continue to give carrot puree during cold. Or should I avoid any food at this time.
Your reply would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Sushma
Dr Hemapriya says
Hello sushma,
Thank you for your appreciation, it means a lot 🙂
You can try saline drops to overcome the blocked nose or try this Nasobuddy aspirator, it works well
Yes you can continue with carrot puree
Take care

Kunal says
Hello Hema,
In the above chart, the frequency of food for 6 months baby is twice i.e at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Can I increase the frequency? Can i add one more meal in the evening?
I give her juices at 11 am and purees at 3 pm. Please suggest meals for evenings so that baby feels full for longer time.
Thanks.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Kunal,
Yes you cna give three meals if your baby is ok with it, do breastfeed on demand as till 1 year of age, breastmilk should be the major nutritional source for teh baby. you cna move the 11 am schedule little prior to 9 am, then 1 pm and then 4 pm
Kunal says
Hi
Thanks for your revert.
I do breastfeed on demand.
Can you suggest some meal option for 4:00 pm
Thanks!
Dr Hemapriya says
Any puree or porridge would be good
Kunal says
Thank you so much for your revert !!! 🙂

Hi,
My baby is 6 months old n have started with fruit juices and purees. But now she is suffering from too much gases. Should I add water to the juices? Till now i am giving extracted juices directly (without water). Please suggest.
My paed has asked to start cow’s milk. But read on your website regarding the cons. So i am Confused!
P.S. : Your recipes are superb and properly explained.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Kunal,
I don’t think so juices may be the reason for gases, though I would advice you to give more of fruit purees than juices, as purees are nutritionally superior.
My advice would be since your doctor has approved cow;s milk, you can add milk for porridges but never replace cow’s milk for breast milk
Cheers
Hema
Dharani says
Hi doctor,
My boy is about to start his 5 months . So shall i give him ragi porridge, and apple puree
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Dharani,
It is always advisable to start solids after 6 months, if your paediatrician advices to start early, you cna go ahead, also check this link ” How to know whether my baby is ready for solids?”
Varsha says
Hello dr.
I am a working women and my baby stay in day care for hole day. So is it ok if i cook puree in the morning and feed her at 11am and 3 pm in a day.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Varsha,
The viability of the puree depends on type of vegetable or fruit, for example apple puree has to be consumed immediatley as the hours go by all the nutrients are totally lost, I can guide through this, you can book a appointment through this link Consult Dr Hema

Hi Hema
Hope u r fine. This chart is to be given from the beginning of six months or after completion of six months. My son rakshith was born on September 30 2014 and I am breastfeeding him. So as per the above chart when should I start solids. Is it from March 1 week or April 1 week 2015. Please advise.
Also regarding pressure cuker can we use the anodised model in prestige( the black one in prestige cookers) for babies
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Helen,
This chart is to be followed after the completion of 6 months, if your paed has given green signal for solids, you can follow the 5 th month diet chart for your baby, stainless steel cooker is advisable
