Parenthood, a transformative journey that defies preparation, challenges our fears, and inundates us with unparalleled joy. We aspire to provide our children with nothing less than the very best, but sometimes we come across stumbling blocks, particularly when it comes to learning to build our child’s attention and learning ability. One such common obstacle revolves around nurturing and enhancing our child’s attention and learning abilities. In this endeavor, we seek to optimize their attention and learning potential, ensuring a solid foundation for their growth and development.
As young children (say infants and toddlers), their basic nature stems from Curiosity.
Everything in their environment is new & provides them with stimulation and the need to explore.
However, the moment their eye catches something new and novel, there goes their attention. So, how do we as parents help or guide our little curious buddies to increase their attention and therefore encourage learning?
Firstly, it’s important to understand that a child’s attention span will only increase with time and also interesting opportunities provided.
5 Activities to improve attention and learning in children
Let’s take a look at a few activities that may help you and your child, at the same time not taking away the fun from growing up!
1. Charades:-
Charades is a delightful activity that promotes attention and learning in children. It involves the whole family and can be enjoyed during playdates too. By forming teams, each member actively participates.
One team member whispers an action word to their partner, who then acts it out while the rest of the team guesses. Simple actions like running, walking, or jumping are great to start with, gradually introducing new words. Encourage your child to repeat the action as you say the corresponding word, reinforcing the connection between words and actions.
Charades boosts attention, listening skills, creativity, imagination, and verbal expression. It requires focused attention to interpret and perform effectively, fostering cognitive development in a fun and interactive way.
Incorporating charades into family activities cultivates attention span, vocabulary, and communication skills in children, creating cherished moments together
2. Act Silly, Animal Silly:-

3. Live Maze
The “Live Maze” activity is a fun and engaging way to promote attention and learning in children. By using household items to create pathways and obstacles, children navigate through the maze, honing their problem-solving skills and staying focused. This interactive experience enhances attention, encourages physical activity, and fosters spatial awareness, making learning enjoyable and dynamic. Incorporating the Live Maze into playtime provides a fun opportunity for children to develop their attention and critical thinking abilities while exploring and overcoming challenges.
4. Puzzles:-
Looking to add a twist to boost attention and learning? Try puzzle treasure hunting! Solve a puzzle together, then hide one piece. Sit down to solve it again, making finding the missing piece the ultimate goal. Play “hot and cold” with clues like “It’s near something we sit on!” Watch their attention soar as they search for the hidden treasure, honing problem-solving skills. It’s a playful way to enhance attention and learning while adding excitement to puzzle-solving
5. Trips/shopping/supermarkets:-
Turn these simple daily routines into fun and learning opportunities. At the supermarket, ask your child to help you select red coloured tomatoes (be careful not to add to many adjectives e.g. round etc, stick to any one) this will apply to all the articles you buy that day and the entire week that follows e.g. colour. Planning an outing today…superb! involve your child in its preparations, tell him the place you are going to visit, what you are packing for the same. On the way back, recap the trip with your child.
Attention and Learning happen faster and easier when it happens the fun way…sing along with children, recite Nursery rhymes, let them fill in the word. All in all, have fun.
“Towards the end, I would like to mention here, each child grows at their own pace and providing an exciting and stimulating environment will aid in the overall development of the child.”
Feedback, suggestions, and questions are always welcome.
