Many moms mailed me to ask ” Can you recommend any other recipe for lunch instead of the same boring khichdi recipe?”
Although there are many other options for lunch, khichdi is very nutritious and also a fiiling meal for the munchkins.
So I tried out various combinations for khichdi and came out with these 10 easy khichdi recipe.
The basic ingredients are the same for all the Khichdi Recipe
1. Rice
White or Brown rice can be given, brown rice is a little heavy but very nutritious.
2. Dal
Toor Dal/Moong Dal
Any of the above Dals can be added. Before introducing the dals to khichdi make sure you have given them separately as Dal Ka Paani.

Hema says
Please give fresh khichdi. Fresh foods are the best for kids.
D says
What is the recipe of ash guard khuchfi
Dr Hemapriya says
It’s same as vegetable kichdi. Please add ash guard instead of mixed veggies.
Gayatri says
Hi dr Hema
I love your work. Thank you.
How can we give kitchdi to babies ( like 8-9 months) when they still don’t have teeth?
They will swallow it whole right. Should we give mashed food till teeth come?
Dr Hemapriya says
It’s definitely our pleasure. Baby’s gums can also chew the basic foods like rice, dal etc. So kindly cook it well and feed the baby. Please feed little by little to check how comfortably baby accepts it.
Delilah says
Hello Dr. Hema,
Thank you for all the lovely helpful recipes.
With regards to the kichdi recipes, if we use brown matta rice instead of white are the number of whistles the same?
I only tried making kichdi once first with 3 whistles and since the rice was not fully cooked another 3 whistles. But even after 6 whistles the rice was still not soft enough. Not sure if I did something wrong. Please advise what I could change
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Delilah,
Welcome 🙂 While using brown rice, you can soak it for sometime and then cook using the pressure cooker. Soaking would make it easy to get cooked.

Hi Hema I have gone through your many receipes all r very interesting, my daughter is just completed 7 mth on last day of 6 mth I tired giving her rice moongdal along with pumpkin carrot potato small pieces khichadi I made the khichadi in cooker b4 giving to her I had done smash with spoon, she had it 3 to 4 spoon aftr that she avoided n spit out khichadi n next day she got problem of poop more than 4 times in sticky form aftr every meal or taking BM & FM milk so i am not able to understand that khichadi form has bcm heavy to digest or what bcz in 6.mth I gve her powder cereal rice, instant khichadi mix there she not had such problem or that vegetables which I used in khichadi not suited to her pumpkin was first time introduced in Khichadi form. Please advise me on khichadi form when I can start I bcm very conscious to introduce her khichadi
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Milan,
You can introduce pumpkin and giving khichdi is also fine. Passing motion after meal is normal. it is because of the physiological process which happens after eating. As soon as the food reaches the stomach, it starts a peristaltic wave which pushes the stools in the rectum. This happens only after digestion. So you don’t have to worry about that as long as baby does not cry during potty or pass blood.

Hi DrHema
Thank you so much for your wonderful recipes, my baby really enjoys them. She is 9 months old and has a problem with rice as she gets constipated after eating it. So I couldn’t give her any rice recipe till now but I want her to get used to it as rice is major part of our meal. Please help me out how I can give her rice without constipating her.
Thanks
pr says
Hey Afia,
There are many recipes that you can try to feed your child with rice. Initially when you are feeding rice to your child feed 1 or 2 sips of water for every spoon of the feed and give ample of water for the child to digest the given food.
Apart from the white rice you can try feeding your child with millets, brown rice, red rice etc. Which not only helps and increases the nutrition it also helps in other minor infractions such as constipation, diarrhea etc in children.

mallika n says
Hi, my baby is a now ayear old and still doesn’t accept mashed food – so i blend the khichdis. If i follow the proportions and blend – it becomes very liquid like soup which i feel isn’t good nutrition enough – as my doc tellls me i need to give solid food not soupy liquid food to a one year old. Please help – am miserable 🙁 she is a fussy eater and doesnt eat so its tough enough as it is.
secondly how can i make soffft paranthas without adding too much ghee and how much ghee is allowable for a baby? one year old – doc says 1 tsp only – difficult to mk soft parantha in one tsp or soft dosa for that matter.
Dr Hemapriya says
Hi Mallika,
It is common that babies get used to mashed food and transition to solids can be difficult. You can try the following methods
1. For picky eaters, feed power packed foods like avocado, yogurt, tofu, eggs, veggies (such as carrots and squash) that re highly nutritious.
2. Slowly change the consistency from liquid to semi solid and then solid, the transition may not happen overnight, it takes a lot of patience to stick to it.
3. Try to give her healthy finger foods that are soft and easily chewable.
Yes, one spoon of ghee is the required amount for one day, try to make the dough little earlier, maybe then the parathas may turn soft
AANCHAL SETHI says
While making dough can even add curd , sometimes boiled potatoes say one spoon …this is how I make the parathas soft .
I add boiled veggies to the dough to make veg paratha ,
I add dal to the dough …
This mean while kneading dough , i add these ingredients which make wonderful parathas for babies..My baby loves it ..
